It was a shock to her and to the judges. Jessica Sanchez, the powerhouse singer in the petite 16-year-old body was in the bottom three this week on American Idol. She is a favorite of the judges and clearly has a music career ahead of her. Even more shocking was the announcement that she was the one leaving the show this week. A collective gasp was heard across the audience as Ryan Seacrest said those words.
My parents were celebrated Sunday by the church they’ve pastored for the last six years. They’re retiring not only from that pastorate but from more than 43 years of ministry all over the place. It was a special day and as I watched and listened to what people shared and thought about how God has used them throughout all that time I was thankful, amazed and proud. It was no rose-lined path they walked even though there definitely were beautiful places here and there. They have faced their share of trouble, as we all do. My dad sank into a deep depression and burnout when I was about 21. He took some time away and returned ready to share some of the issues he was wrestling with, including expectations others had for his life. His parents, my grandparents, were missionaries and somehow while growing up my dad perceived there is a hierarchy of servants when it comes to ministry for Jesus. A California couple has been arrested for trying to sell their 6-month-old baby outside a Wal-Mart store for $25. Evidently their need for narcotics outweighed their love for their child. How desperate they must be to try trading the little one for drug money. It seems they’ve sunk to the lowest of lows. I feel sorry for them – what kind of existence is that? The baby was removed by social services so it’s safe, even though it was born to and nursed by a woman hooked on meth. You can read an article about it here.
When I read this I was appalled, baffled. I’m sure the women the father approached in that parking lot were so taken off guard. “Is this guy kidding? $25??” Surely a life is worth more than that. Continue reading
